Liet-Kynes is the son of Pardot Kynes (18 years old at the start of the campaign). His mother is Fremen, and he has been brought up as a Fremen. He is known to the Fremen as Liet, and to others as Doctor Kynes. His father has applied for him to take over as Imperial planetologist on his death - it is unlikely that this application will be refused. Liet Kynes has been taught by his father, and so will continue his father's work to transform Arrakis into a green planet.

!!Pardot Kynes (Umma)

The Imperial planetologist on Arrakis, Kynes discovered that there had once been surface water on the planet. He came into contact with the Fremen after he saved some young boys that were being attacked by a Harkonnen patrol, and tried to persuade the Fremen to help him turn Arrakis into a lush planet with relatively small areas of desert. The Fremen, after much deliberation, ordered him killed, as tradition dictated. His killer, Uliet, approached him while he was lecturing. Kynes simply told Uliet to &quot;Remove yourself&quot; and walked past him. Uliet took three steps and deliberately fell on his crysknife. This was taken to be a sign from god, and so the Fremen allowed Kynes to live. Kynes married a Fremen woman and had a son, Liet Kynes.

A water merchant, with factories in the north polar region. His factories and water supplies can be destroyed on his command, which has allowed him to stay independent, and not be controlled by the Harkonnens.

!!Esmar Tuek
A spice smuggler, based in the polar regions of Arrakis. For many years he has been for smuggling spice off Arrakis for profit. A cunning and astute businessman, Tuek has secret arrangements with the Fremen, both as a means of making profit and as a way of undermining the rule of the Harkonnens. He has a son named Staban.

!!Herk Chulo
A merchant who trades in anything that will make him a profit. It appears that his latest venture is women of the bled.

His logo is a square, quartered in red and white, and bordered in white and red:

His father has applied for him to take over as Imperial planetologist on his death - it is unlikely that this application will be refused. Liet Kynes has been taught by his father, and so will continue his father's work to transform Arrakis into a green planet.

The Fremen, after much deliberation, ordered him killed, as tradition dictated. His killer, Uliet, approached him while he was lecturing. Kynes simply told Uliet to &quot;Remove yourself&quot; and walked past him. Uliet took three steps and deliberately fell on his crysknife. This was taken to be a sign from god, and so the Fremen allowed Kynes to live. Kynes married a Fremen woman and had a son, Liet Kynes.

Once a '''female''' character has spent sufficient time training (GM's discretion), she may attempt to take the Water of Life. First, roll vs Health to survive the poison long enough to take the second roll. On failure, the character starts to die. Death will take 10 minutes for every point the roll was failed by. During this time, the character will be in extreme agony, and will be unable to take any conscious actions. On success, the character may make a roll against Bene Gesserit Insight. On a successful roll, the character falls into a trance for a number of minutes equal to the number rolled, before awakening as a Reverend Mother. If the roll is unsuccessful, the character may make successive <del>attempts,</del><ins>attempts (rolling vs Health then Bene Gesserit Insight),</ins> with a<ins> cumulative</ins> -1 modifier<ins> to both rolls</ins> for each successive attempt, as per the rules on page 92 of the v3 Basic Rules.

!Default Rolls
Reverend mothers (whether Bene Gesserit or Fremen) have many lifetimes of experience and knowledge to draw upon. As such, they may make a default roll for any test that they do not have the relevant skill for. If the skill has no default, a reverend mother may make a default roll at DX-6 or IQ-6.

A spice smuggler, based in the polar regions of Arrakis. For many years he has been for smuggling spice off Arrakis for profit. A cunning and astute businessman, Tuek has secret arrangements with the Fremen, both as a means of making profit and as a way of undermining the rule of the Harkonnens. He has a son named Staban.

A merchant who trades in anything that will make him a profit. It appears that his latest venture is women of the bled.

!Baradye Pistol
A Fremen invention, used for measurement or signalling in the desert. Its primary purpose was to mark off a large area for dye which could be used in the capture of sandworms, or to signal spice merchants approaching from the air. Weight 1lb.

!Distrans
Steganographic device producing a temporary neural imprint on the nervous system of bats or birds. The creature's normal cry then carries the message imprint which can be sorted from that carrier wave by another distrans. See Chiroptera (Desert Bat) on the [Arrakis] page.

!Fremkit
Desert survival kit. Contents include a stilltent, thumper, paracompass and maker hooks. Weight 12lb.
!!Stilltent
A stilltent was basically an inflatable tent used to sleep in the deep desert of Arrakis. It was usually placed under a layer of sand. The tissue was airtight, so the humidity created inside could be kept and gathered, much like a stillsuit. This equipment was fundamental in travelling and surviving on Arrakis. A 2 person stilltent weighs around 5lb.
!!Thumper
A simple mechanical device used to attract a worm, by pounding into the sand. Thumpers are used to summon a worm, normally to be ridden. Some thumpers used a candle to delay the start by about an hour. A thumper weighs 3lb.
!!Paracompass
A compass designed for use on Arrakis. Normal compasses will not function correctly due to the unstable nature of the planet's magnetic field. It is not possible to navigate Arrakis without a functioning paracompass. Treat as per familiarity rules in GURPS Basic Set (p. B43) when first using a paracompass to navigate. $200, negligible weight. They are powered for a year on an A cell.
!!Maker Hook
A simple mechanical device used to mount and control a worm. Maker Hooks open up the worm's segments, preventing it from retreating under the sand. By exploiting the fact that opening segments exposes the sensitive interior to the sand, it is possible to make a worm turn by opening segments closer to the sand - the worm will turn to move the exposed area away from the sand.

At least two hooks are required to mount and control a worm. They weigh 2lb each.

!Glowglobe
A small, spherical illuminating device with a built-in suspensor field. Power and light are provide by three bacteria that feed each other in a self-contained miniature ecosystem.

!Jubba Cloak
A cloak worm over a stillsuit, it provides protection against heat during the day, warmth at night, and camouflage in the desert. The Fremen are adept at using their jubba cloaks to conceal themselves in the desert, and get a +2 to camouflage rolls in the desert when wearing a jubba cloak.

!Krimskell Fibre
The &quot;claw fibre&quot; woven from strands of the hufuf vine from Ecaz. Knots tied in krimskell fibre will claw tighter and tighter to pre-set limits when the knot-lines are pulled. When tied with krimskell fibre, each escape attempt after the first is at an extra -1 (cumulative) as the knots tighten (so the second attempt is at -1, third at -2, etc)

10 yards of krimskell fibre costs $100 and weighs 1.5lb.

!Personal Shield
The most common defence in the Imperium, but very rare on Arrakis, because the issues with [worms|Shai-Hulud] and <del>[Storms]</del><ins>[storms|Storms]</ins> mean that they cannot be used in the desert.

A complete body shield is generated from a device mounted on the belt. It provides PD 8, DR 0 against most hand-to-hand attacks. Against swinging/crushing and swinging/cutting attacks it provides PD8, DR 3. Against projectile attacks of a speed more than 7 cm/s it provides PD 12, DR 50. The device weighs a half-pound and is powered for 20 minutes of constant use on a rechargeable B cell. It costs $500.

When a laser beam comes into contact with a Holtzman Shield, it results in a large explosion, similar to that of a nuclear device. See the Lasgun entry on the [Weapons] page for details.

!Pseudo-Shield
A device designed for use exclusively on Arrakis, the pseudo-shield generates a Holtzman field that will give no protection, but will drive sandworms crazy in exactly the same way as a full personal shield. A pseudo-shield hit by a lasgun will create an explosion in the same way as a personal shield.

!Stillsuit
A water reclamation full-body garment of Fremen design and manufacture for survival in the desert. An unprotected man, without access to a staggeringly large water supply, can last no more than a day on the sands; one wearing a stillsuit of Fremen manufacture, however, can keep water loss under fifteen millilitres a day, a thimbleful. Less efficient versions of the suits produced in village factories are greatly inferior and offer no appreciable level of protection.

All desert Survival rolls, when wearing a properly adjusted, Fremen stillsuit are at +4. Without a stillsuit (or using a stillsuit produced in a village factory), survival rolls are at -10. A Fremen stillsuit costs $1000, weighs 10 pounds and provides PD1, DR 1.

Stillsuits produced in village factories are commonly sold in Arrakeen and Carthag for $200-$300. They weigh 5 pounds and provide no armour protection, nor do they provide a bonus to desert Survival rolls.

!Suspensor
A Holtzman field generator that nullifies gravity, usually built into a piece of equipment such as a glowglobe, to allow it to float where it is placed.

Liet-Kynes is the son of Pardot Kynes (18 years old at the start of the campaign). His mother is Fremen, and he has been brought up as a Fremen. He is known to the Fremen as Liet, and to others as Doctor Kynes. His father has applied for him to take over as Imperial planetologist on his death - it is unlikely that this application will be refused. Liet Kynes has been taught by his father, and so will continue his father's work to transform Arrakis into a green planet.

!!Pardot Kynes (Umma)

The Imperial planetologist on Arrakis, Kynes discovered that there had once been surface water on the planet. He came into contact with the Fremen after he saved some young boys that were being attacked by a Harkonnen patrol, and tried to persuade the Fremen to help him turn Arrakis into a lush planet with relatively small areas of desert. The Fremen, after much deliberation, ordered him killed, as tradition dictated. His killer, Uliet, approached him while he was lecturing. Kynes simply told Uliet to &quot;Remove yourself&quot; and walked past him. Uliet took three steps and deliberately fell on his crysknife. This was taken to be a sign from god, and so the Fremen allowed Kynes to live. Kynes married a Fremen woman and had a son, Liet Kynes.

More than one wanted his blood but it was only when Hamzah (a proud and noted warrior of the sietch) made an accusation that my father demanded a duel - a duel that he lost, thereby proving his cowardice.

Hamzah became responsible for my mother and I for the space of a year. He honoured Halimah in that time and, at the end of that year, he gifted Halimah the water rings he had for killing Salman and she became his second wife. His first wife having proved barren, my half-sister Johara remains the only child of his body, but he has always treated me as his own son and has taught me what my true father did not - pride, self-respect and how an insult should properly be answered.

I, however, remain the son of a coward and must strive every day to escape my father's reputation. I will not accept an accusation of cowardice and, I must challenge any man who insults me. Now that I have a wife and child of my own, I sometimes wonder how much of my father's faint-heartedness was actually rooted in care for his family and I begin to understand why he challenged Hamzah when he stood accused by so many others. Whatever I may suspect, I cannot find it within me to forgive or emulate him. I must prove myself. Better my daughter should inherit a legacy of honour than one of cowardice.

In 10,172 Mash'al was captured by the Harkonnen and taken to Carthag for interrogation. In a daring escape, Mash'al killed Iraklii Harkonnen, the then-governor of Arrakis. After this, his sietch name was changed to Shihab.

Zahra sat back to rest for a moment, and took a sip of the warm, odd-tasting water from the catchpockets of her stillsuit. She and the others had been in the desert for several hours now, salvaging what they could from a wrecked harvester. The Harkkonen wretches that had manned it were long gone - lost to Shai-Hulud. There were a few trinkets that might fetch a few coins in the Arrakeen markets, and a couple of half-empty litrejohns, but the harvester itself and most of the equipment was beyond repair. She smiled to herself as she noticed a kangaroo mouse scampering up the dune. As she watched, it stopped, turned, and darted directly toward the harvester, disappearing from sight into the sand beneath it. Instantly, she was on her feet, scanning the horizon. Although she could see no sign of the storm, she could feel it coming, she *knew* it was there. She called to the others, and began to run in her uneven, almost hap-hazzard gait toward the rocks just over the next dune. She did not look back to the others: the desert would not be forgiving if she dallied. The warm wind was picking up, and the sand was starting to swirl. As she reached the edge of the rocks, the storm was beginning to bite. She paused, and counted her companions into the safety of a cave. There was one missing: Nudjum. It was too late to go back out to look for him, and Zahra knew his water was lost to the desert.

Addawl is shorter than most. His thinness is more due to poor diet than constant exercise. His &quot;beard&quot; is several days' stubble and his hair dark brown. His eyes are (to you) ridiculously pale.

Addawl's parents died when he was very young, leaving him and a dependent (I shall say a younger brother) growing up scavenging and selling junk near the Arrakeen spaceport. He eventually got a job at the Thopterport as a mechanic, until his brother was killed in some unspecified way that Addawl blames partly on the Harkonnen but mostly on himself.

Having nothing left in the city, he decided to go find his distant cousins. Or get eaten by a Worm, he wasn't fussed.

His continued survival surprises the hell out of him.

Mattis sabotaged a Harkonnen ornithopter so that it would crash a little way out of the city, but the engine couldn't be turned off. He arrived at the spot just as it crashed. The vibrations of the engine and beating wings meant that a worm arrived quickly, and after it had devoured the ornithopter, Mattis ran towards it, vaguely wondering what would happen.

As he reached the worm, he noticed the rings, and jammed the crowbar he was carrying into the join between two segments. He almost lost his grip as he was suddenly wrenched upwards, but managed to cling on, marvelling at what he had done.

Not knowing how or where to steer, Mattis simply hung on for dear life. Eventually, the worm tired near a mountain of rock, and Mattis was able to jump off the worm as it sank under the sand. As he walked toward the mountain, he realised that there were people on the rocks, and the next thing he knew, he was surrounded by them. He was too tired to fight as they took the litrejohns from his back and bundled him into a cave in the mountain.

Zahra sat back to rest for a moment, and took a sip of the warm, odd-tasting water from the catchpockets of her stillsuit. She and the others had been in the desert for several hours now, salvaging what they could from a wrecked harvester. The Harkkonen wretches that had manned it were long gone - lost to Shai-Hulud. There were a few trinkets that might fetch a few coins in the Arrakeen markets, and a couple of half-empty litrejohns, but the harvester itself and most of the equipment was beyond repair. She smiled to herself as she noticed a kangaroo mouse scampering up the dune. As she watched, it stopped, turned, and darted directly toward the harvester, disappearing from sight into the sand beneath it. Instantly, she was on her feet, scanning the horizon. Although she could see no sign of the storm, she could feel it coming, she *knew* it was there. She called to the others, and began to run in her uneven, almost hap-hazzard gait toward the rocks just over the next dune. She did not look back to the others: the desert would not be forgiving if she dallied. The warm wind was picking up, and the sand was starting to swirl. As she reached the edge of the rocks, the storm was beginning to bite. She paused, and counted her companions into the safety of a cave. There was one missing: Nudjum. It was too late to go back out to look for him, and Zahra knew his water was lost to the desert.

Raghba is a twelve-year-old Fremen boy - now the adopted son of the Naib. The Naib doesn't really have that much time for him these days, and neither does his mother, who is far more interested in maintaining her position of power over the Naib.

He's just approaching the age at which he'll ride his first maker, and is looking forward to it. He's particularly looking forward to stepping out of his dead father's shadow.

He is tall for his age, about 5' 2&quot;, and is just beginning to fill out his frame. His dark hair is still glossy with youth and curls around his face. His voice - if it were to stay in one octave for more than a sentence at a time - is developing a friendly but commanding tone, but he smiles less and less these days.

His father, Da'Summ, called out the leader of the sietch in an attempt to gain control of it, but was killed in the ensuing duel. His mother, Ibhama, was taken as the naib's wife, and he and his brother Qaliilan (5 years old) were taken in as his sons.

Other members of the tribe wonder why his father made the challenge - it wasn't well supported, and Raghba feels that they are judging him as cut from a similar hot-tempered, arrogant mould.

He has studied hard, and learned a lot from his elders. He tries to be patient, clear-headed and a good Fremen; but he is, at the same time, only twelve. There are a lot of  lessons that life has yet to teach him.

Liet-Kynes is the son of Pardot Kynes (18 years old at the start of the campaign). His mother is Fremen, and he has been brought up as a Fremen. He is known to the Fremen as Liet, and to others as Doctor Kynes. His father has applied for him to take over as Imperial planetologist on his death - it is unlikely that this application will be refused. Liet Kynes has been taught by his father, and so will continue his father's work to transform Arrakis into a green planet.

!!Pardot Kynes (Umma)

The Imperial planetologist on Arrakis, Kynes discovered that there had once been surface water on the planet. He came into contact with the Fremen after he saved some young boys that were being attacked by a Harkonnen patrol, and tried to persuade the Fremen to help him turn Arrakis into a lush planet with relatively small areas of desert. The Fremen, after much deliberation, ordered him killed, as tradition dictated. His killer, Uliet, approached him while he was lecturing. Kynes simply told Uliet to &quot;Remove yourself&quot; and walked past him. Uliet took three steps and deliberately fell on his crysknife. This was taken to be a sign from god, and so the Fremen allowed Kynes to live. Kynes married a Fremen woman and had a son, Liet Kynes.

Addawl is shorter than most. His thinness is more due to poor diet than constant exercise. His &quot;beard&quot; is several days' stubble and his hair dark brown. His eyes are (to you) ridiculously pale.

Addawl's parents died when he was very young, leaving him and a dependent (I shall say a younger brother) growing up scavenging and selling junk near the Arrakeen spaceport. He eventually got a job at the Thopterport as a mechanic, until his brother was killed in some unspecified way that Addawl blames partly on the Harkonnen but mostly on himself.

As he reached the worm, he noticed the rings, and jammed the crowbar he was carrying into the join between two segments. He almost lost his grip as he was suddenly wrenched upwards, but managed to cling on, marvelling at what he had done.

Not knowing how or where to steer, Mattis simply hung on for dear life. Eventually, the worm tired near a mountain of rock, and Mattis was able to jump off the worm as it sank under the sand. As he walked toward the mountain, he realised that there were people on the rocks, and the next thing he knew, he was surrounded by them. He was too tired to fight as they took the litrejohns from his back and bundled him into a cave in the mountain.

Addawl's parents died when he was very young, leaving him and a dependent (I shall say a younger brother) growing up scavenging and selling junk near the Arrakeen spaceport. He eventually got a job at the Thopterport as a mechanic, until his brother was killed in some unspecified way that Addawl blames partly on the Harkonnen but mostly on himself.

Defaults to DX-5 if the character is a desert Fremen, no default for other characters. This skill is only available to desert Fremen.

This skill is the ability to mount and direct a giant sandworm to be used for transportation across the great deserts. A thumper (a Fremen device that simulates the rhythmic thumping of the mating-call made by a female sandworm when she prepares her nest) calls a male sandworm, where the rider rushes to the side of the worm and inserts a specially designed maker hook into the ring segments of the worm.

Once the rings are opened, exposing the sensitive inner tissues of the sandworm, the sandworm will rotate to shift the opening as far from the surface of the sand as possible. The sandrider holds onto the hook and is carried to the top of the worm, where he mounts more hooks to direct the worm, opening rings along the side to turn the worm.

A successful roll vs. Riding (Sandworm) skill is necessary to mount and gain control of the worm. Critical failure means the worm has smothered the rider, burying him under the bulk of his body (see rules concerning suffocation).

The traditional calls given by a wormrider to direct the steersmen (those that open segments to steer the worm) are:

This is the ability to use the Bene Gesserit ability to observe minutiae and gain insight from them. A success allows the character to gain some insight into the target. The specific insight is left to the GM's discretion, but this ability could be used to allow the character to detect that the target is holding something back, to warn the character that the target is not as friendly as he appears, etc. Detecting a specific lie requires a roll against this skill, with a -4 modifier.

!Water
Not technically a drug, but very important on Dune. In the cities, water-sellers charge 20-30 solaris for a litre of water. Both city and desert fremen do what they can to preserve water, though desert fremen are far better at this than those that live in the cities. Desert sietches have death stills, which can retrieve about 40 litres of water from a dead body.

!Melange
Melange only occurs on Arrakis, but is one of the most important substances in the imperium. Various organisations depend on it, and many nobles are addicted to it.

A melange addict will receive the advantages Immunity to Disease, Longevity and Acute Vision (when on Arrakis or other planets close to bright A, F or G class stars). Once addicted the user can never safely discontinue use of the drug. If forced to withdraw, treat as per the disadvantage Terminally Ill with the character's expected lifespan equal to his HT in weeks. Unless the addict can gain access to the drug, insanity begins to set in at HT/2 weeks (taking the form of several of the following disadvantages: Berserk, Delusions, Compulsive Behaviors, Mania, Manic-Depression, Paranoia, Phobias, Split-Personality). Access to the drug will reverse some of these effects if the user is not completely gone.

Melange is very expensive, and highly addictive. However, because of the preponderance of spice on the planet Arrakis, addiction to melange will occur naturally within one or two years of living there. It can be postponed a year or two by including many off-world foods into the diet, but is inevitable.

An addict requires two grams of spice per day. On Arrakis, melange is common enough in nature to meet an addicts requirements through normal food and drink. Off-world, however, a 2 gram dose costs $250. Melange is worth -25 points as an addiction, or -5 points if the character lives on Arrakis.

!Nerve Poison
Used on crysknives, maula pistols, etc. A single dose injected into the body requires an immediate HT-4 roll to avoid being paralyzed for (30-HT) minutes. 4d damage is taken if an antidote is not taken within 5 minutes. A dose costs $5. Nerve poison is Legality Class 0.

!Nerve Poison Antidote
An antidote for the nerve poison used by the Fremen. If it is successfully applied, the target will be immediately freed from the paralysis, and the 4d damage is not applied.

Fremen typically carry the antidote in disposable, one-shot applicators. Once the antidote has been administered, the applicator is discarded. Use of the applicator requires a ''First Aid'' roll, and the applicator gives the +1 bonus for using a first aid kit (an untrained Fremen using an applicator therefore rolls against IQ -4). On a critical failure, the dose is used up and so the applicator cannot be used for another try. More &quot;civilised&quot; people don't tend to use one-shot applicators, and rely instead on their medical personnel.

!Non-Lethal Poison
Used on crysknives, maula pistols, etc when expecting to capture, rather than kill. When injected into the body, it causes intense pain but no real damage: the victim loses no HT but has -1 to DX for the next hour, for each time he is hit with the poisoned weapon. This effect is immediate. A successful HT roll prevents all effects. This poison adheres well to a weapon: roll 1 die each time it strikes. The poison wears off only on a 1 or 2, and not at all on blocks and parries. A dose costs $5. Legality Class 0.

!Water of Life
The bile of a sandworm, exhaled immediately before death by drowning. A Reverend Mother may change the water, turning it into a powerful narcotic. This is done by drinking a small amount, changing it, then regurgitating the changed water back into the original container. The changed water will lower inhibitions and, in the case of Fremen, release latent prescient and telepathic abilities.

A '''female''' character may drink the water of life in an attempt to become a [Reverend Mother|Reverend Mothers].

!Baradye Pistol
A Fremen invention, used for measurement or signalling in the desert. Its primary purpose was to mark off a large area for dye which could be used in the capture of sandworms, or to signal spice merchants approaching from the air. Weight 1lb.

!Distrans
Steganographic device producing a temporary neural imprint on the nervous system of bats or birds. The creature's normal cry then carries the message imprint which can be sorted from that carrier wave by another distrans. See Chiroptera (Desert Bat) on the [Arrakis] page.

!Fremkit
Desert survival kit. Contents include a stilltent, thumper, paracompass and maker hooks. Weight 12lb.
!!Stilltent
A stilltent was basically an inflatable tent used to sleep in the deep desert of Arrakis. It was usually placed under a layer of sand. The tissue was airtight, so the humidity created inside could be kept and gathered, much like a stillsuit. This equipment was fundamental in travelling and surviving on Arrakis. A 2 person stilltent weighs around 5lb.
!!Thumper
A simple mechanical device used to attract a worm, by pounding into the sand. Thumpers are used to summon a worm, normally to be ridden. Some thumpers used a candle to delay the start by about an hour. A thumper weighs 3lb.
!!Paracompass
A compass designed for use on Arrakis. Normal compasses will not function correctly due to the unstable nature of the planet's magnetic field. It is not possible to navigate Arrakis without a functioning paracompass. Treat as per familiarity rules in GURPS Basic Set (p. B43) when first using a paracompass to navigate. $200, negligible weight. They are powered for a year on an A cell.
!!Maker Hook
A simple mechanical device used to mount and control a worm. Maker Hooks open up the worm's segments, preventing it from retreating under the sand. By exploiting the fact that opening segments exposes the sensitive interior to the sand, it is possible to make a worm turn by opening segments closer to the sand - the worm will turn to move the exposed area away from the sand.

At least two hooks are required to mount and control a worm. They weigh 2lb each.

!Glowglobe
A small, spherical illuminating device with a built-in suspensor field. Power and light are provide by three bacteria that feed each other in a self-contained miniature ecosystem.

!Jubba Cloak
A cloak worm over a stillsuit, it provides protection against heat during the day, warmth at night, and camouflage in the desert. The Fremen are adept at using their jubba cloaks to conceal themselves in the desert, and get a +2 to camouflage rolls in the desert when wearing a jubba cloak.

!Krimskell Fibre
The &quot;claw fibre&quot; woven from strands of the hufuf vine from Ecaz. Knots tied in krimskell fibre will claw tighter and tighter to pre-set limits when the knot-lines are pulled. When tied with krimskell fibre, each escape attempt after the first is at an extra -1 (cumulative) as the knots tighten (so the second attempt is at -1, third at -2, etc)

10 yards of krimskell fibre costs $100 and weighs 1.5lb.

!Personal Shield
The most common defence in the Imperium, but very rare on Arrakis, because the issues with [worms|Shai-Hulud] and [Storms] mean that they cannot be used in the desert.

A complete body shield is generated from a device mounted on the belt. It provides PD 8, DR 0 against most hand-to-hand attacks. Against swinging/crushing and swinging/cutting attacks it provides PD8, DR 3. Against projectile attacks of a speed more than 7 cm/s it provides PD 12, DR 50. The device weighs a half-pound and is powered for 20 minutes of constant use on a rechargeable B cell. It costs $500.

When a laser beam comes into contact with a Holtzman Shield, it results in a large explosion, similar to that of a nuclear device. See the Lasgun entry on the [Weapons] page for details.

!Pseudo-Shield
A device designed for use exclusively on Arrakis, the pseudo-shield generates a Holtzman field that will give no protection, but will drive sandworms crazy in exactly the same way as a full personal shield. A pseudo-shield hit by a lasgun will create an explosion in the same way as a personal shield.

!Stillsuit
A water reclamation full-body garment of Fremen design and manufacture for survival in the desert. An unprotected man, without access to a staggeringly large water supply, can last no more than a day on the sands; one wearing a stillsuit of Fremen manufacture, however, can keep water loss under fifteen millilitres a day, a thimbleful. Less efficient versions of the suits produced in village factories are greatly inferior and offer no appreciable level of protection.

All desert Survival rolls, when wearing a properly adjusted, Fremen stillsuit are at +4. Without a stillsuit (or using a stillsuit produced in a village factory), survival rolls are at -10. A Fremen stillsuit costs $1000, weighs 10 pounds and provides PD1, DR 1.

Stillsuits produced in village factories are commonly sold in Arrakeen and Carthag for $200-$300. They weigh 5 pounds and provide no armour protection, nor do they provide a bonus to desert Survival rolls.</ins>

!Suspensor
A Holtzman field generator that nullifies gravity, usually built into a piece of equipment such as a glowglobe, to allow it to float where it is placed.

Once a '''female''' character has spent sufficient time training (GM's discretion), she may attempt to take the Water of Life. Roll vs Bene Gesserit Insight, with a -4 modifier. On a successful roll, the character falls into a trance for a number of minutes equal to the number rolled, before awakening as a Reverend Mother. On an unsuccessful roll, the character starts to die. Death will take 10 minutes for every point the roll was failed by. During this time, the character will be in extreme agony, and will be unable to take any conscious actions.

!Default Rolls
Reverend mothers (whether Bene Gesserit or Fremen) have many lifetimes of experience and knowledge to draw upon. As such, they may make a default roll for any test that they do not have the relevant skill for. If the skill normally has a default roll, they get a default roll at 2 points better than anyone else (eg if the default roll is normally DX-6, it would be DX-4). If the skill has no default, a reverend mother may make a default roll at DX-6 or IQ-6.

!Other Rules
Reverend mothers are immune to all poisons.

Melange only occurs on Arrakis, but is one of the most important substances in the imperium. Various organisations depend on it, and many nobles are addicted to it.

A melange addict will receive the advantages Immunity to Disease, Longevity and Acute Vision (when on Arrakis or other planets close to bright A, F or G class stars). Once addicted the user can never safely discontinue use of the drug. If forced to withdraw, treat as per the disadvantage Terminally Ill with the character's expected lifespan equal to his HT in weeks. Unless the addict can gain access to the drug, insanity begins to set in at HT/2 weeks (taking the form of several of the following disadvantages: Berserk, Delusions, Compulsive Behaviors, Mania, Manic-Depression, Paranoia, Phobias, Split-Personality). Access to the drug will reverse some of these effects if the user is not completely gone.

Melange is very expensive, and highly addictive. However, because of the preponderance of spice on the planet Arrakis, addiction to melange will occur naturally within one or two years of living there. It can be postponed a year or two by including many off-world foods into the diet, but is inevitable.

An addict requires two grams of spice per day. On Arrakis, melange is common enough in nature to meet an addicts requirements through normal food and drink. Off-world, however, a 2 gram dose costs $250. Melange is worth -25 points as an addiction, or -5 points if the character lives on Arrakis.

!Nerve Poison
Used on crysknives, maula pistols, etc. A single dose injected into the body requires an immediate HT-4 roll to avoid being paralyzed for (30-HT) minutes. 4d damage is taken if an antidote is not taken within 5 minutes. A dose costs $5. Nerve poison is Legality Class 0.

!Nerve Poison Antidote
An antidote for the nerve poison used by the Fremen. If it is successfully applied, the target will be immediately freed from the paralysis, and the 4d damage is not applied.

Fremen typically carry the antidote in disposable, one-shot applicators. Once the antidote has been administered, the applicator is discarded. Use of the applicator requires a ''First Aid'' roll, and the applicator gives the +1 bonus for using a first aid kit (an untrained Fremen using an applicator therefore rolls against IQ -4). On a critical failure, the dose is used up and so the applicator cannot be used for another try. More &quot;civilised&quot; people don't tend to use one-shot applicators, and rely instead on their medical personnel.

!Non-Lethal Poison
Used on crysknives, maula pistols, etc when expecting to capture, rather than kill. When injected into the body, it causes intense pain but no real damage: the victim loses no HT but has -1 to DX for the next hour, for each time he is hit with the poisoned weapon. This effect is immediate. A successful HT roll prevents all effects. This poison adheres well to a weapon: roll 1 die each time it strikes. The poison wears off only on a 1 or 2, and not at all on blocks and parries. A dose costs $5. Legality Class 0.

The bile of a sandworm, exhaled immediately before death by drowning. A Reverend Mother may change the water, turning it into a powerful narcotic. This is done by drinking a small amount, changing it, then regurgitating the changed water back into the original container. The changed water will lower inhibitions and, in the case of Fremen, release latent prescient and telepathic abilities.

!Riding (Sandworm) (Physical/Average) DX-5
Defaults to DX-5 if the character is a desert Fremen, no default for other characters. This skill is only available to desert Fremen.

This skill is the ability to mount and direct a giant sandworm to be used for transportation across the great deserts. A thumper (a Fremen device that simulates the rhythmic thumping of the mating-call made by a female sandworm when she prepares her nest) calls a male sandworm, where the rider rushes to the side of the worm and inserts a specially designed maker hook into the ring segments of the worm.

Once the rings are opened, exposing the sensitive inner tissues of the sandworm, the sandworm will rotate to shift the opening as far from the surface of the sand as possible. The sandrider holds onto the hook and is carried to the top of the worm, where he mounts more hooks to direct the worm, opening rings along the side to turn the worm.

A successful roll vs. Riding (Sandworm) skill is necessary to mount and gain control of the worm. Critical failure means the worm has smothered the rider, burying him under the bulk of his body (see rules concerning suffocation).

The traditional calls given by a wormrider to direct the steersmen (those that open segments to steer the worm) are:

!Force Shield (Physical/Easy) DX-4
This is the ability to use the Holtzmann Defensive Shield in man-to-man combat. The shield can be used to block or parry incoming attacks. The Block score is determined normally as per Shield skill (i.e.: Block = 1/2 Force Shield), the Parry score is derived normally from any of the unarmed combat skills like Boxing, Brawling, Karate, and Judo (i.e.: Parry = 1/2 Brawling or 2/3 Karate, Judo or Boxing).

!Bene Gesserit Insight (Mental/Hard) No default
This is the ability to use the Bene Gesserit ability to observe minutiae and gain insight from them. A success allows the character to gain some insight into the target. The specific insight is left to the GM's discretion, but this ability could be used to allow the character to detect that the target is holding something back, to warn the character that the target is not as friendly as he appears, etc. Note that lies cannot be detected using this skill.

This skill is only taught to Bene Gesserit acolytes and Fremen Sayyadina.


!Bene Gesserit Voice (Mental/Very Hard) No default
Prerequisite: <del>/Bene</del><ins>''Bene</ins> Gesserit <del>Insight/</del><ins>Insight''</ins> at the same level or higher

This skill is only taught by the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and to Fremen Sayyadina. It is not normally available to other characters. Through Voice, a subtle manipulation of vocal tones, a Bene Gesserit can manipulate individuals by triggering clue tones. The skill requires a period of careful observation of the intended victim's speech pattern before it can be used. Usually a few clear sentences uttered by the victim are enough. Certain voice patterns trigger primal human responses, and the registered person can be controlled in any situation.

A quick contest of skills, Bene Gesserit Voice vs. Will -6, is required for a successful use of this skill. If successful, the victim can be ordered to comply with any order of moderate complexity.

A large, heavy, mobile factory that is dropped by a carryall onto the desert, where it would harvest a spice blow. Harvesters have tracks that allow them to be driven short distances if required. There are two doors (one on each side), and a few windows at the front and sides. Harvesters are fitted with radios, and there is also a direct communication link to the carryall when it is being carried. They have a crew of four to ten.

A very large ornithopter, used to carry harvesters. Carryalls are fitted with radios, and there is also a direct communication link to the harvester when it is being carried. They have a crew of two.

!Riding (Sandworm) (Physical/Average) DX-5
Defaults to DX-5 if the character is a desert Fremen, no default for other characters. This skill is only available to desert Fremen.

This skill is the ability to mount and direct a giant sandworm to be used for transportation across the great deserts. A thumper (a Fremen device that simulates the rhythmic thumping of the mating-call made by a female sandworm when she prepares her nest) calls a male sandworm, where the rider rushes to the side of the worm and inserts a specially designed maker hook into the ring segments of the worm.

Once the rings are opened, exposing the sensitive inner tissues of the sandworm, the sandworm will rotate to shift the opening as far from the surface of the sand as possible. The sandrider holds onto the hook and is carried to the top of the worm, where he mounts more hooks to direct the worm, opening rings along the side to turn the worm.

A successful roll vs. Riding (Sandworm) skill is necessary to mount and gain control of the worm. Critical failure means the worm has smothered the rider, burying him under the bulk of his body (see rules concerning suffocation).

The traditional calls given by a wormrider to direct the steersmen (those that open segments to steer the worm) are:

!Force Shield (Physical/Easy) DX-4
This is the ability to use the Holtzmann Defensive Shield in man-to-man combat. The shield can be used to block or parry incoming attacks. The Block score is determined normally as per Shield skill (i.e.: Block = 1/2 Force Shield), the Parry score is derived normally from any of the unarmed combat skills like Boxing, Brawling, Karate, and Judo (i.e.: Parry = 1/2 Brawling or 2/3 Karate, Judo or Boxing).

!Bene Gesserit Insight (Mental/Hard) No default
This is the ability to use the Bene Gesserit ability to observe minutiae and gain insight from them. A success allows the character to gain some insight into the target. The specific insight is left to the GM's discretion, but this ability could be used to allow the character to detect that the target is holding something back, to warn the character that the target is not as friendly as he appears, etc. Note that lies cannot be detected using this skill.

This skill is only taught<del> by</del> to Bene Gesserit acolytes and Fremen Sayyadina.<ins>

!Bene Gesserit Voice (Mental/Very Hard) No default
Prerequisite: /Bene Gesserit Insight/ at the same level or higher

This skill is only taught by the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and to Fremen Sayyadina. It is not normally available to other characters. Through Voice, a subtle manipulation of vocal tones, a Bene Gesserit can manipulate individuals by triggering clue tones. The skill requires a period of careful observation of the intended victim's speech pattern before it can be used. Usually a few clear sentences uttered by the victim are enough. Certain voice patterns trigger primal human responses, and the registered person can be controlled in any situation.

A quick contest of skills, Bene Gesserit Voice vs. Will -6, is required for a successful use of this skill. If successful, the victim can be ordered to comply with any order of moderate complexity.

Liet-Kynes is the son of Pardot Kynes (18 years old at the start of the campaign). His mother is Fremen, and he has been brought up as a Fremen. He is known to the Fremen as Liet, and to others as Doctor Kynes. His father has applied for him to take over as Imperial planetologist on his death - it is unlikely that this application will be refused. Liet Kynes has been taught by his father, and so will continue his father's work to transform Arrakis into a green planet.

!!Pardot Kynes (Umma)

The Imperial planetologist on Arrakis, Kynes discovered that there had once been surface water on the planet. He came into contact with the Fremen after he saved some young boys that were being attacked by a Harkonnen patrol, and tried to persuade the Fremen to help him turn Arrakis into a lush planet with relatively small areas of desert. The Fremen, after much deliberation, ordered him killed, as tradition dictated. His killer, Uliet, approached him while he was lecturing. Kynes simply told Uliet to &quot;Remove yourself&quot; and walked past him. Uliet took three steps and deliberately fell on his crysknife. This was taken to be a sign from god, and so the Fremen allowed Kynes to live. Kynes married a Fremen woman and had a son, Liet Kynes.

A water merchant, with factories in the north polar region. His factories and water supplies can be destroyed on his command, which has allowed him to stay independent, and not be controlled by the Harkonnens.

A cunning and astute businessman, Tuek has secret arrangements with the Fremen, both as a means of making profit and as a way of undermining the rule of the Harkonnens. He has a son named Staban.

!!Herk Chulo
A merchant who trades in anything that will make him a profit. It appears that his latest venture is women of the bled.
